The ableist bollocks of new age gurus.
Every time I see a new age guru type spouting privileged ableist bollocks about how life is easy really, and that you’re just doing this or that wrong, and if you would just do this simple thing, or if you would just buy this, then all your problems will go away, I will write a counter post.
Life, for many/most, can be a series of painful setbacks, challenges, and often insurmountable trauma after trauma. This is not your fault. You cannot just blow your nose (or whatever) and everything be ok.
This is bullshit spoken/written to make you feel bad/worse so you will buy their false promises of a different life. Whoever you are and whatever you’re dealing with, my guess is that most of you are doing the best that you can with the circumstances you are in.
Yes, certain tools can be helpful to make things less painful/difficult, but these tools are not magic wands which make all problems disappear immediately.
Real deep change can take a long long time and lots of effort, and there are some things that are simply impossible to change. Often, the real challenge is accepting what’s on your plate and learning to live with it/manage it.
But this is becoming increasingly difficult as the new age trend grows for people saying things like: “it’s all your creation”, “what are you doing to deserve this?”, “you should be doing it differently”.
This stuff is so damaging, and it’s wrong.
Please don’t let these types of people increase your guilt or self-blame.
Please don’t beat yourself up because your life isn’t as perfect as these self-professed ‘guru’ sales people (and their followers) tell you it should be.
I honour people’s pains and struggles. I respect people for climbing mountains, only to be faced with yet another. I’m amazed at how strong and determined people can be in the face of huge difficulty. And I have huge empathy for people when they feel lost or stuck or weak or in need.
Love,
